Cross-country runner honored during Cass County stop

Around the County Posted on February 17, 2026

Shortly after 1 p.m. Monday, a lone runner pushing a jogging cart adorned with an American flag made his way up the hill on Edwardsburg’s Main Street, escorted by a Cass County Sheriff’s Office deputy. At the top of the hill, a small crowd had gathered — children holding handmade signs, residents waving American flags, and Cass County Commissioner Sam Barrera prepared to recognize the runner with one of the County’s most distinct honors: a Cass County challenge coin.

Noah Coughlan is currently undertaking a 5,500-mile journey across the United States, traveling on foot through all 50 states to promote a message of unity, perseverance and shared national pride. On Presidents’ Day, Coughlan passed through Cass County as he ran from Union to Niles, marking another milestone in a months-long effort that has captured attention and support from communities across the country.

Commissioner Barrera presented Coughlan with the county challenge coin as a gesture of welcome and appreciation for his commitment and endurance. The challenge coin is reserved for individuals who demonstrate exceptional dedication, service or achievement, and the presentation recognized both the physical demands of the journey and the broader message behind it.

“Running across this country takes incredible grit, determination, faith and perseverance,” Barrera told Coughlan when presenting the coin. “We are honored you’re passing through our community today and it’s my pleasure to present you with our county challenge coin. We’re wishing you strength for the miles ahead.”

Coughlan has previously completed four cross-country ventures covering various regions of the United States. Through this latest effort, he aims to become only the third person known to have crossed all 50 states on foot.

“It’s a message of unity,” Coughlan said. “It’s a message that we’re stronger together. There’s nothing political about it. The flag’s not political. The flag belongs to all of us. We’ve come a long way in 249 and a half years, and we’re looking forward to the next 250.”

The journey is scheduled to conclude around Independence Day 2026, aligning with the nation’s 250th anniversary. Along the way, Coughlan is honoring veterans, celebrating American communities and encouraging unity across geographic and cultural divides.

Residents who gathered in Edwardsburg offered encouragement as Coughlan continued on his route through the county to Niles. For many, the moment represented more than a brief stop along a long road — it was a reminder of shared values, resilience and the power of individual determination.

Coughlan departed Cass County Monday afternoon, continuing his journey toward his next destination and the many miles still ahead.
